Abstract

Abstract

In recent years, obesity rates is rising rapidly in the world and in Turkey. Obesity is a risk factors of chronic diseases, and smoking is associated with both chronic diseases and obesity. There were some controversies about the associations between smoking and obesity. Thus the aim of this study is to examine relationship between non-smoking, giving up smoking and obesity according to smoking. Multinomial Logit Model (MNLM) was used to test this relationship together. In the analysis, we use Health Survey of Turkish Statistical Institute for the year 2019 . Model results show that obesity increases in those who giving up smoking compared to those who smoke. This result came out as expected in the literature. But another consequence show that the obesity rate is higher in non-smokers compared to smokers. We cannot say that give up smoking alone increases obesity. The obesity rate is high in non-smokers shows that there is a risk of obesity health problems for Turkey itself. In this respect, it is suggested that policies which aim help to reduce both smoking and obesity simultaneously.
